Crozatier Museum - Restorations - Embossed gilt leather panel

The details of the restoration
The study of Jean-Pierre Fournet, specialist in gilded leather, drew our attention to these elements. Their probable common origin, their originality and their historical value guided the choice of a restoration.
These golden leather tiles had had an erratic history before the restoration project. Probably coming from a larger ensemble, perhaps from a setting in the Château de Gordes, certain elements (if not all) arrived at the museum in 1873. Their history has been lost, they were dismantled and then reassembled in an anarchic manner and technically disastrous.
They also suffered water damage.
The panels were unstitched, cleansed, flattened, reassembled by a new seam taking up historical traces, and reassembled on a frame. A small modern leather element has been added to complete the assembly which offers the public a glimpse of this type of luxurious 17th century decor.

The restorer
Céline Bonnot-Diconne, certified restorer at the Museum of France, leather specialty.
Restored in 2021 with the help of the Regional Restoration Assistance Fund, co-financed by the State and the Region.
The panel is visible in the room of Renaissance works of art.

VIDEO Report for the TF1 1pm news

Leather restoration, an exceptional skill.

Here is a restoration workshop that has all the makings of a clinic for leathers, and in particular the so-called Cordoba leathers. These are painted leathers, slightly in relief, like the one shown here. It is a treasure from the end of the 17th century, used as an altar front. It was recently rediscovered in a Savoyard church. Master of art, Céline Bonnot-Diconne is one of the five people in Europe who know how to restore them. The detail of the wounds and their depth are revealed under the microscope. The microscope also reveals some of the secrets of the work's manufacture, which is traditionally covered with silver leaf. It is because this decorative art is a poor relation, neglected by museums, that the specialist has become passionate about it. The smallest dressings are made on the spot. Some are made from polyester, as if to suture a wound, others from resin, to fill holes, or from leather. In all cases, all interventions must be documented and reversible over time, according to the master craftsman.

IBAF 2021: 8th Ion Beam Applications Francophone Meeting

IBAF 2021: 8th Ion Beam Applications Francophone Meeting
Initiated in Nouan-le-Fuzelier in 2003 under the impetus of B. Agius, President of the French Vacuum Society, and G. Amsel, one of the pioneers in the application of vacuum physics in the field of physics. Agius, President of the French Vacuum Society, and G. Amsel, one of the pioneers in the application in the fields of condensed matter physics, materials science, heritage, the Earth, and the living world, but also of ion beams from small accelerators originally intended for nuclear physics studies, IBAF has been held regularly since then :

Carcans 2008,
Namur (Belgium) 2010,
Cadarache 2012,
Obernai 2014,
Annecy 2016 and
Nouan le Fuzelier 2018.
Initially scheduled for June 2020, this 8th edition of IBAF will take place this year in a virtual format, from 5 to 7 July 2021.

These days are focused on the production and exploitation of particle beams of energy up to a few MeV, typically from electrostatic accelerators or small cyclotrons. But presentations on much higher energy particle beams, neutrons or electrons, could also be of interest to the community, as the underlying physics and technology are in part common between these different themes.

The programme will favour presentations by young PhD and post-doctoral students, giving them priority for oral presentations. Poster presentations are also welcome. Posters will be available for consultation throughout the conference and will be given a short oral presentation (5 min) in dedicated sessions.

Papers, preferably in French, are invited on all aspects of the application of ion beams for materials analysis and for materials studies under irradiation.

Discover 7 excellent know-how for which history and their stories intertwine yesterday and today!

Master of Art Céline Bonnot-Diconne takes us to the heart of Napoleon's campaigns.

In 2014, Céline Bonnot-Diconne, leather restorer, worked on Napoleon's campaign armchair whose leather seat was torn following an accident during the preparation of the Napoleon at the Bivouac exhibition at the Palais Fesch - Musée des Beaux-Arts in Ajaccio. Thanks to the Art Master, the armchair, dated 1808, was restored in time to be presented to the public. Property of the Mobilier National, this folding armchair of Napoleon is now deposited in the Musée de l'Armée.

Céline Bonnot-Diconne is a restorer of works of art approved by the Musées de France. For more than 20 years, she has devoted herself to a very particular material: leather. In 2015, she was appointed Master of Art and undertook to pass on her know-how to Marie Héran, herself a qualified restorer. At the Centre de Conservation et de Restauration du Cuir (Leather Conservation and Restoration Centre), which she founded in 2002, she works on a wide variety of works: archaeological leathers, furniture, polychrome gilded leathers known as Cordoba leathers, etc. Each of her interventions is documented and guided by the constant concern to carry out measured restorations that respect the traces of use while offering a satisfactory presentation to the public.

Leather decorations rediscovered in the presbytery of Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves (Savoie)

Very degraded fragments of a leather decoration were rediscovered, hidden behind a cupboard, in the presbytery of the commune of Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves (Savoie).

The 2CRC has completed the restoration of these elements, which has enabled the reconstruction of a long-lost decoration: an altar front in gilded polychrome embossed leather that decorated the Rosary chapel. Dated around 1700 and of French origin, it has exceptional gilded backgrounds and a central medallion painted in oil with the Virgin and Child.

Restoration: C.Bonnot-Diconne, M.Heran and C.Snyers.

A book dedicated to Gilt leathers

Art historian Jean-Pierre Fournet is devoting a book to the sumptuous heritage represented by so-called Gilt leathers, the restoration of which is the specialty of the master of art Céline Bonnot-Diconne.
More than a year ago, the art historian Jean-Pierre Fournet confided his emotion while the master of art Céline Bonnot-Diconne and her former student Marie Héran were at the Château d'Ecouen. The two restorers then returned to the Renaissance Museum, after several months of work, an exceptional polychrome gilded leather wall hanging, exceptional both in size and in its history.

Find out more about the La Bataille de Gelboé hanging

Today, the researcher pays homage to these so-called Gilt leathers, a sumptuous and little-known heritage that only a few craftsmen can claim to restore. He published a book - the first of this scope devoted to the subject - which traces the history of polychrome gilded leather decorations, in particular from those preserved in France.

The book is titled Golden Leather, Gilt Leather. European art. Published by Editions Monelle Hayot, it includes a rich iconography of more than 600 images.

MUSEUMS OF DIJON - documentary (RETURNS FROM RESTORATION)
For a year now, the doors to the museums of Dijon have - unfortunately - remained closed to the public more than they have been open ... But this closure to the public does not mean the total cessation of activity!
The direction of the museums of the city of Dijon thus decided to entrust us with the realization of a mini-series in order to make you discover part of the operations which continued during this period… These missions are, even in a usual context, often invisible to visitors. They take place in spaces and times that are not accessible to the public, mainly for security reasons; but they remain essential, even vital, to the life of museums and their collections.
Welcome to “Behind the scenes of Dijon museums”!

Episode 2 - Restoration Returns
What policy for the restoration of works of art? What techniques are used? For what objectives and what results? The restoration of works of art advances the knowledge that museums have of their own collection ... but not only. Catherine Tran-Bourdonneau, curator for the Dijon museums, explains the value of these restorations to us.

Ancestors of wallpapers, golden leathers, also often called Cordoba leathers because this ancestral technique was imported from southern Spain to Flanders by the Spaniards, are luxurious decorations that were used throughout Europe, especially 16th to the end of the 18th century, to adorn the interior of the richest residences. These gilded leathers from Flanders from the 17th and 18th centuries, which are reused, were placed by Mr. Jameson, owner of the castle from 1855 to 1869. This castle knew various more or less happy fortunes before being moved by its abandonment and its state dilapidated, the family of the owners, by buying the castle 16 years ago, decided to give it life and luster. The leather restoration will be carried out by Mrs. Bonnot Diconne and her internationally known company 2CRC: her great expertise in this field is recognized by the greatest museums.

LA DEPECHE : The municipality is mobilizing for its heritage

Heritage, Bordères-Louron

Monday, May 6, Céline Bonnot-Diconne brought back to the church Saint-Germé, in Ilhan, the antependium she had restored. An antepedium is a decoration located in front of the altar. Like many other objects, it reflected the richness of a place: thus, it could be made of precious metal, embroidery and pearls ... or for the poorest ones like here, leather. An opportunity for the inhabitants and elected officials to discover this altar frontal, a specimen that is now rare in France. The conservator specified that the Pyrenees and the Alps regions are the places where one finds most of these decorative elements in leather. Indeed, the climate of the mountains is favourable for the conservation of this material with low temperatures and a significant humidity. If we add to this that the Revolution has rarely reached the valleys, the religious heritage is rather well preserved.

The antependium has been restored in the studio of this artist, almost the only one in France to be interested in leather. She removed the dust, sewn it when necessary, put a little paint where it was too cracked. But she especially made talk this object. She explains that this is a re-use, the dimension being too big for the altar. The technique was always the same for the making of these altar fronts: a sheepskin worked to acquire flexibility, carved in tile and covered by silver leaves. These leaves were then coated with a golden varnish, hence the name of the craftsman who did this work: gilder on leather. It was still necessary to press molds on the tiles and to paint the raised decorations thus obtained. Ilhan's Deputy Mayor, Gilbert de Benque, is very proud of the work done. Because, for him, it was necessary to do it. All that the elders left us must be kept. So that, in a few years, our young people say: They have kept a lot of things. A facing that should only be maintained with a feather duster, even the passage of a cloth that may ultimately deteriorate.

The memory of villages can go through heritage

The churches of the small mountain villages are full of treasures: statues, altars, tabernacles or murals are all traces of the history of these territories. Thanks to the tranquility of places that have not been affected by wars of religion or the French Revolution, these objects are still often in good condition nowadays. And if necessary, the municipalities mobilize and make financial efforts to conserve or even make them restore. This is the case of a leather antependium, a setting positioned in front of the altar, at the church of Ilhan, in the commune of Bordères-Louron.

Céline Bonnot-Diconne is one of the rare specialists of the restoration of leather objects in France. What motivated her, she admits it is that nobody born is interested.

Meeting with Céline Bonnot, from Abergement Sainte-Colombe to Villa Médicis

Céline Bonnot-Diconne, born November 20, 1969 in Saint-Rémy, fell from an early age into the pot of archeology.

And yet, she did not grow up in the middle of the old stones, but rather surrounded by cars. His parents have long held the garage of Abergement-Sainte-Colombe.

I started to search at the age of 13 in Tournus and at the Celtic archaeological site of Bragny-sur-Saone, she recalls. I quickly became aware of the fragility of the heritage discovered and the value of keeping it in a better state.
